Lack of learner knowledge causes poor career choice selection and consequently leads to unemployment.
Teachers' impact on their students' lives cannot be overstated. Given that our country has a relatively low employment rate, instructors must help their students choose vocations that are in demand for future employability chances. Becoming a teacher implies that one has to be updated with the changes that take place in our world. Since teaching is the mother of all professions, teachers are responsible for giving guidance to their learners and ensuring that they enlighten them about the sectors that need a workforce. Such recommendations are impossible for a teacher to make without first conducting the necessary research. Teachers should learn how to adapt to change and further their profession as a result of living in a dynamic world. By employing previous tactics that worked well with previous pupils, teachers should not remain in their comfort zones, they should find new ways to accommodate the changes in time. According to the concept of a teacher-researcher, educators should stay up to date on new knowledge and apply it to enhance learning environments and empower students. The Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Dr. Nzimande, addresses the dilemma of students enrolling in overcrowded classes even though their skills are not in demand in the job market in the following brief video.
This video by the minister shows the urgency with which learners need to be informed about relevant career paths considering the ongoing changes in the world due to the advancement of technology and the introduction of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Teachers need to be informed for them to advise the learners on the skills that are required in South Africa and abroad. To get informed they have to research, making them teacher-researchers. The most in-demand jobs or specializations now did not exist five to ten years ago, and while change is happening faster than before, the usefulness of workers' current skill sets is eroding. Therefore, to fully take advantage of the opportunities given by these trends and to prevent undesired outcomes teachers need to better foresee and prepare themselves as well as the youth "for future skills needs, job content, and the collective influence on employment." (Kirschner & Stoyanov, 2020). As stated above, knowing the current socio-economic and educational context, teachers need to constantly refresh their knowledge through research to become better practitioners.
